What are polymers and how is their molecular weight typically characterized?

Polymers, or polymer compounds, are substances with large relative molecular weights ranging from thousands to millions. They consist of many homologs with different molecular weights, hence the molecular weight is described as an average. These compounds are made up of thousands of atoms linked by covalent bonds in a repetitive structural pattern. The study of these substances is called polymer science.
