Best Approaches to Editing a Statement of Purpose

I've been struggling with editing my Statement of Purpose for grad school, and it's harder than I thought. Last week, I spent hours fixing grammar mistakes, but now it feels too dry and formal. I’m not even sure if it sounds like "me" anymore. Anyone else feel like they lose their voice when trying to make everything perfect? I’ve tried reading it out loud, but even that doesn’t seem to help much. How do you balance clarity and personality in these essays?
